An action, not a performance, by pushing and pulling a rolbos along Riebeek West's old railway line. A plant built for aimless drift, given a fixed, human-directed path, a moving memory. What's carried inside is a history that isn't the artist's alone to tell: notes written by the community, sealed and held rather than read. About the Artist

Karen Stander is a South African contemporary installation and process-based artist based on a wheat and sheep farm in the Riebeek Valley.  Her practice is mainly rooted in walking as a form of attention.  Operating at the intersection of land art, ecology, and community engagement, she works through slow, immersive engagement with landscape. Here she works with gathering, marking, and material traces to explore relationships between body, place, and ecological home.

Holding a BA (Hons) in Fine Arts from the Open University (UK) alongside a professional background in social work, Stander offers a deeply reflective voice in contemporary eco-critical art. Her career has earned regional recognition, notably featuring as a Sasol New Signatures finalist in 2025.
